Two forum posts of interest to glassworkers

We’ve opened up discussion forums at SmartFlix, and we’ve got a forum just for glassworkers!

Find it  here.  We’ve already got a few posts.  Julie D. asked about what torch to buy, and Charlie P. has opinions.  Is he right?  Let Julie (and all of us!) know.

Also, we’re now running contests at SmartFlix.  There’s a woodworking contest running now (you can see it by clicking on the “contests” tab on any SmartFlix page).

Some lucky woodworker is going to win a $250 prize!

Should the next contest be a glassworking contest (and should the next prize go to a glassworker) ?

You tell us!

Chime in at the discussion thread “The next contest … what should it be?”

(Make sure to click the “login” link at the top right of any page at SmartFlix to be able to post your questions, responses, and ideas.)

I’m glad that we’re making SmartFlix even more of a community of artists and crafters, and I hope to see you at the forums!

The Perfect Project - Motorcycle Metal

Take advantage of this temporary, seasonal quarantine of your “second favorite lady” or build a brand new eye-popper for the next season. As Ian Parish points out, you have to have a reason to build but they are usually not hard to find. He makes a few suggestions below:

  1. I want to ride a custom chopper, a totally cool stretched out, fire breathing, gas eating, pavement pounding, old lady scaring, 2-wheel monster
  2. I want to be able to say “I built that” when someone asks me where I got that totally sick bike
  3. I want to be able to customize the bike beyond the standard add on parts I can get for my current bike
  4. I want to be able to make this dream come true, meaning I need to be able to pay for it. A $35,000 chopper is out of my current budget
  5. I have been talking about this for 5 years so why don’t I get to it and stop doing all the talking and start doing some building”

Once you have the reasons down, now you have to choose what level you want to take this project to. According to Ian, you’ve got four, basic options: a kit bike, a rolling chassis, a start from zero build, or an extreme makeover of a current motorcycle. Just about whatever you choose, SmartFlix can help you get the know how to make your road-hogging pleasure palace a reality.

The centerpiece of your bike is the custom gas tank and the English Wheel is what some of the top chopper builders, like Jesse James, use to make there tanks. Shaping the perfect tank, setting it up to draw gas out properly, setting up bladders is an art form that requires a lot of metalworking knowledge. Let us help you get started with:

English Wheel Techniques. In this video, Ron Corvell brings his signature easy-to-follow style to using the English Wheel, a machine notoriously difficult for beginners to “figure out.” You get a crash course in this important machine, common techniques of wheeling and some lesser-known processes.

For those who have some experience working with the English Wheel but want to sharpen their skills we have:

Advanced Techniques for the English Wheel. Fine tune your skills and learn a wealth of techniques, methods, and solutions.

Of course, you’re also going to need to brush up on your TIG welding and you can do that with:

TIG Welding Basics. Once again, Ron Covell gets you up close and personal with this method of making beautiful welds. A must see for anyone considering a motorcycle build, modify, or repair.

Rent Making Motor Cycle Gas Tanks today and learn two different styles of tank.

You get step by step demonstration of the process of making both a chopper-style tank made from steel and a comma-shaped tank made from aluminum. You get hands-on show of design, layout, patterning, and other techniques specific to the type of metal you’re using. The techniques you will learn in this video will teach you how to make just about any shape of tank.

Hammering metal also comes into play for building a tank. Learn about this with Hammerforming Techniques.

For your custom junkies out there we have:

Motorcycle Metal Fabrication: from Sheet to Street. Watch master metal fabricator Ron Fournier create custom motorcycle sheet metal parts from scratch. Learn tank, flaring, front fender construction as well as step-by-step fabrication of the bike’s entire rear section (which includes the fender, sides and seat pan).

Was exactly what I expected Johnnie Liliedahl is an excellent artist and a great teacher.

Take some inspiration from an American Master Painter, Richard Schmid:

“Don’t bother about whether or not you have it. Just assume that you do, and then forget about it. Talent is a word we use after someone has become accomplished. There is no way to detect it before the fact… or to predict when or if mastery will click into place.”

Take his advice and see some of this distinguished artist’s work:
